Understanding Special-Steel Smelting and Shanxi Youte Steel's High-Quality Grade Selection

Steel smelting is the cornerstone of modern industry. From ordinary industrial steel to high-end special steel for aviation, aerospace, shipbuilding, steam turbines, and nuclear power, the core of the performance gap lies in the smelting process route. This article systematically explains the full-process technology and, combined with Shanxi Youte Steel Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd.'s stock grades, smelting selection, and supply-chain advantages, presents the complete logic from smelting to delivery.

1. Primary Furnace: The "Rough-Processing Workshop" of Steel Smelting
The core function of the primary furnace is to remove impurities (carbon, sulfur, phosphorus, etc.) from iron feedstock through oxidation and heating, initially forming crude steel that meets basic standards. The converter, electric arc furnace, and open-hearth furnace are the three most representative primary furnaces in history. The converter is used for industrial and quality steel; the electric arc furnace for high-quality special steel; the open-hearth has gradually exited the industrial stage.

(1) Converter (BOF): the high-volume "mainstream workhorse"
Converter steelmaking is the world's dominant crude-steel process. It relies on the chemical heat of the molten iron itself, needs no extra heating energy, and offers the clear advantages of high efficiency and low cost — accounting for over 70% of global crude-steel output.

(2) Electric Arc Furnace (EAF): the flexible, efficient "cradle of specialty steel"
The EAF uses electricity as its main heat source. Its core advantages are flexible feedstock and high controllability, especially suited to high-quality alloy steel and stainless steel — the core equipment of short-process steelmaking. Its hallmark is feedstock flexibility: it can use scrap steel entirely, needs no molten iron, suits short-process production, and costs more than a converter. With technical upgrades, modern EAF efficiency has greatly improved, enabling continuous production while precisely controlling molten-steel composition to meet specialty steel's strict requirements.

(3) Vacuum Induction Furnace and Non-Vacuum Induction Furnace (VIM, NVIM)
Melted in a vacuum environment with low inclusions and low gas, used for master alloys and high-end alloys, providing electrode billets for refining furnaces (ESR electroslag / VAR vacuum arc remelting).

2. Refining Furnace: The "Fine-Processing Workshop" of Steel Quality
The purity, compositional uniformity, and inclusion content of crude steel (from converter, EAF, or VIM) cannot meet high-end needs. The refining furnace's core function is "secondary purification" of the molten crude steel — through degassing, desulfurization, deoxidation, inclusion removal, and precise composition adjustment — raising molten-steel quality and providing qualified billets for subsequent rolling and forging. AOD argon-oxygen decarburization, LF ladle refining, VD vacuum degassing, ESR electroslag, and VAR vacuum arc remelting are the most common refining methods, each focused on different needs.

(1) LF Refining Furnace: the versatile "general-purpose refiner"
The LF (ladle furnace) is the most widely used general-purpose refiner, usable with converters and EAFs, capable of many refining tasks — an indispensable "middle link" in modern steel production.

(2) VD Vacuum Degassing: the "key equipment" for deep degassing
The VD (vacuum degassing) furnace specializes in removing harmful gases such as hydrogen and nitrogen from molten steel, reducing porosity and cracking defects in billets and raising toughness and fatigue strength. It is often used with the LF (refine in LF, then degas in VD).

(3) VOD Vacuum Decarburization / AOD Argon-Oxygen Decarburization: the "dedicated equipment" for stainless steel
VOD/AOD are core refining devices specialized for low-carbon stainless steel. Simple in structure, adaptable, and cost-efficient, they are the mainstream choice for global stainless-steel production, often used with EAFs.

(4) ESR Electroslag Remelting: the "metallurgical dialysis machine" for directional purification
The ESR remelts the ingot "a second time." Its core function is deep purification of the molten steel and improved solidification structure, raising purity and mechanical properties; it is often used with EAFs and VIMs. Working principle: the prepared billet serves as a preformed electrode; alternating current through the molten slag conducts a large current to the bottom water tank; the slag's resistance heat gradually melts the electrode tip, and molten metal drops through the slag pool to resolidify as an ingot in the water-cooled crystallizer. ESR's core traits are outstanding purification, greatly improved purity and isotropy, and fewer defects; excellent solidification structure and markedly better mechanical properties (especially transverse). Applicable to high-performance die steel, bearing steel, cannon steel, and some superalloys — used in precision dies, high-speed bearings, and weapon-grade steel.

(5) VAR Vacuum Arc Remelting: the "ultimate forger" for homogeneous density
The VAR is the "ultimate refining device" for high-end specialty steel and active metals. Its core advantage is directional solidification in a vacuum, further raising purity and structural uniformity and eliminating macrosegregation; often used with VIM. Working principle: inside the vacuum chamber, the VIM-prepared preformed electrode is the cathode and the bottom copper crucible the anode; striking an arc produces high-temperature arcs between the electrode and the starter material at the crucible bottom, melting the electrode tip so droplets fall into the water-cooled copper crucible and solidify as an ingot. VAR's core traits are extremely high purity and uniformity; it can produce active metals (titanium and titanium alloys, zirconium alloys) and superalloys extremely sensitive to segregation, but equipment investment and operating cost are very high and process control is difficult — suited to small-batch, high-end specialty materials. Applicable to turbine-blade superalloys, titanium alloys, zirconium alloys, high-purity rotor steel, and ultra-high-strength steel.

3. Shanxi Youte Steel's Stock Grades and Smelting Selection
With over 20 years in special steel and deep cooperation with Fushun, Daye, and Changcheng Special Steel, focusing on aerospace/military, energy, petroleum, and construction machinery, Shanxi Youte Steel provides the most cost-effective smelting combination for all kinds of high-end industrial steel.

Our main products use "primary furnace + refining furnace" coordinated combinations to achieve both "efficient volume" and "quality uplift," with markedly different flows per grade. Four core combination modes:

1) Ordinary and quality steel (e.g., common stock, carbon steel, ordinary low-alloy steel): ① Converter/EAF (primary, crude steel) → ② LF (refining, adjust composition/temperature, remove impurities) → ③ casting, rolling. Balances efficiency and cost. Common grades: 10#, 20#, 45#, 40Cr, 35CrMo, 42CrMo...

2) Stainless steel: ① EAF (primary, melt scrap + alloy, initial crude steel) → ② LF (fine-tune composition/temperature) → ③ VD (degassing) / VOD (further decarburization for some ultra-low-carbon stainless) → ④ casting, rolling. Some high-end stainless needs added ESR. Common grades: 304 series, 316 series, 17-4Ph, 15-5Ph, 1Cr18Ni9Ti, 13Cr11Ni2W2MoV, 21Cr12MoV, 2Cr12NiMo1W1V, 1Cr15Ni4Mo3N, 1Cr17Ni2, 1-4Cr13, 2205, 2507...

3) Mid-to-high-end alloy steel: ① EAF (primary) → ② LF (initial refining) → ③ VD (deep degassing) → ④ casting, rolling, raising toughness and fatigue strength; some high-end alloy steel needs added ESR. Common grades: 30CrMnSiA, 30CrMnSiNi2A, 30CrNi2MoV, 35Cr2Ni4Mo, 38CrMoAlA, 40CrNiMoA, 18Cr2Ni4W, 25Cr2MoV, 20Cr1Mo1VNbTiB, 45CrNiMoVA, 12CrNi3A...

4) High-end specialty steel and aerospace steel: ① VIM/NVIM (melt master alloy, initial refining) → ② ESR/VAR (secondary remelting, deep purification, optimized structure) → ③ forging, rolling, obtaining extremely high purity and excellent mechanical properties; some high-end products use "VIM+ESR+VAR" triple melting or multiple vacuum remelting. Common grades: GH3030, GH3044, GH4080, GH4169, TC4, TC6, TC11, D406A, 300M, A100, 18Ni, AF1410...

4. Shanxi Youte Steel's Core Quality Advantages
